Meet #GatherReporter Senni!

May 28, 2020

Hey! Tell us who you are and where you’re from.

Hey! I’m Senni and I’m from Finland 🇫🇮

You are a JA/INJAZ alumnus: What did you do during the JA/INJAZ program and what was your role?

I participated in the JA Company of the Year program with four schoolmates. Our business idea was to create a party- and event-planning company for children that would include dressing up and performing as their favorite characters or executing a theme. I was in charge of our social media and planning the events, and I also performed.

How did your JA/INJAZ experience change the way you approach things now?

I was really anxious and insecure before my JA year. During the year I learned to push myself out of my comfort zone and slowly started to enjoy it. It taught me that sometimes you need to fall through to be able to learn and then you come back stronger than before. Nowadays of course I still feel nervous sometimes (read: often), but I learned to focus that nervousness and turn it into an asset. It drives me to keep going forward.

If you had a choice between two superpowers—being invisible or flying—which would you choose and why?

Definitely flying! As a kid I was always jumping from places and trying my best to wiggle my arms so I could fly.

Imagine you’ve been given as much money as you want. What kind of company would you start and why?

I would start a consulting firm focusing on human resources and foreign affairs.

Imagine you could interview your favorite celebrity. What questions would you ask him/her?

I would interview my one of my childhood role models, Martti Ahtisaari. He is the tenth President of Finland, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and a United Nations diplomat.

My questions would be:

1. What is the biggest mistake you made and what did you learn from it?

2. What one thing would you change in the world?

3. What should be taught in schools that isn’t a subject yet?

What’s your favorite quote?

“Understanding is love’s other name.” —Thich Nhat Hanh

What is your superpower and why?

I would say empathy. It inspires me and helps build connections.

What are you most excited about regarding the Gather Reporters?

Being able to widen my perspective, meet new people, hear their stories, and, of course, share them with others! During this program, I’m also hoping to improve my writing, editing, and filming skills.
